[00:00] Steereo:

Welcome everybody, we’re here with Scott Harris in the beautiful Hotel Roosevelt for today’s 99% Podcast.

Scott Harris:

Thank you!

Steereo:

You came all the way from Dallas to be here.

Scott Harris:

Yes, I flew in late last night.

Steereo:

How are you liking L.A.?

Scott Harris:

I’ve been here a couple of times and it’s beautiful every time I’m here.

Steereo:

I think it super hot down in Dallas right now, right?

Scott Harris:

Unreal, it beats you down.

Steereo:

Scott, tell us a little about yourself. Where you’re from, your background, things like that.

Scott Harris:

I was actually born in Laguna Hills, grew up near Philly, spent some time in Orlando and Miami, and then ended up in Dallas and I’ve been there since. Got into dance music when I was in Orlando and just stuck with it.

Steereo:

I’m a huge fan, so it’s an honor today. Explain to people your sound of music. The genre, anyone they can put you in a box with?

Scott Harris:

I don’t try to be just one genre; dance music can be pop, crossover commercial, big room, I just try to get the energetic sound and a euphoric feeling. That’s kind of how I envisioned my experience with dance music. My first experience with dance music was really great, everything was going well, and it’s hard not to get excited and pumped up hearing it, so that’s what I try to recreate in the studio.

[02:07] Steereo:

So party style? Let’s take it all the way back. How long have you been doing music? When was it a hobby, when did it become a passion, and when did it become a career?

Scott Harris:

I got into it at the Blink-182 Self Titled Album, 2005-ish. Got more into alt rock and garageband, and from there I saw Tiesto come through Orlando. Everything totally changed, the whole vibe was different, and I couldn’t get enough of it. Whether it was him, Zedd or Avicii, I kept digging and digging until I started to create it myself.

Steereo:

At Steereo, we’re all about the independent artist. How did you find it was, breaking into the music industry? Did you find it challenging, was it tougher than you expected, was it easier? When I look at your spotify account, this is what all independent artists would die for. Hundreds of thousands of streams on all your tracks. How did you find that.

Scott Harris:

It was definitely challenging. I would say the first songs I had, and actually got signed to a label were terrible and I’m surprised they got picked up. I think it was just a rush to get any EDM artist  they could, they picked it up, and from there I started focusing more on the production side. I think the key is to never stop pushing it. As soon as you start to slow down, you start to fall off and fade. That’s the most challenging part; you don’t necessarily know where you’re going next, you don’t necessarily know what you’re doing, but you have to keep trying to figure it out and sprint at the same time.

Steereo:

Everyone talks about inspiration. I personally get inspired by so many different things. If you take the latest songs you’re working on, what is inspiring them at the moment?

Scott Harris:

A little bit of what’s on the radio, but what it comes down to is what I want to hear. That kind of feel. I put myself in people’s shoes. If they’re not feeling happy, I think, how can I get myself out of this small television thing I’m in? If I can do that through music, that’s what I get inspired by.

Steereo:

You’re one of our Steereo artists. In your opinion, do you think it’s it’s harder for an independent artist these days? Do you think it’s easier given the platforms of Spotify or Instagram or Pandora? Is it easier now for an artist to break into the industry? Or more difficult?

Scott Harris:

It’s a little bit of both. It’s obviously easier for any artist to get out there and promote themselves. At the same time, anyone that’s ever had that dream is right there with you. As much as it’s now more open and available, you also have a lot more saturation. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing because competition helps feed creativity, and help to push you and collaborations are awesome. It’s definitely a unique opportunity if you can seize it.

Steereo:
What I’m super impressed with about you is you’re technically the C.E.O. of your own career because you have a background in business, you’ve run companies before. Is music your career, your purpose, your passion? How do you find the balance between making them all work? People watching this work their 9-5 jobs are afraid to take a jump and be brave enough to stop that. What’s your advice for them?

Scott Harris:

It’s a full time job so devote as much time to it as you can. You’re not going to spend all day at a studio recording songs and being inspired. You spend 50% of your time making music, and other 50% networking, emailing, collaborating, coming up with new things, and then doing your other jobs. You just have to find a way to make it all work.

Steereo:

The problem is when you have three full-time jobs. This year, so far, it’s August now, what have you been most excited about? Is it a new direction, a song, a gig you’ve played, is it your ever increasing Spotify numbers? What is the thing you’re most excited about?

Scott Harris:

I’m very excited for the E.P.  It’s four tracks, different genres within the dance music scene, it’s  all uplifting whether you’re going out to party or going out for a run, it’s all exciting. It’s got a little bit of everything, and you can expect it around October. I have a couple singles as well.

Steereo:

Say someone hops into a ride-sharing service and they’re listening to Steereo and your E.P. is playing. What is it you want them to feel or hear or take away from the new E.P. you’ve just written?

Scott Harris:
I want them to feel that they can take a breath from whatever’s going on in their life and take a minute just to feel everything’s okay. I want to call it being above the clouds just because I see a lot of people lately that suffer depression that aren’t really able to talk about it, have different things going on and I just notice that they feel like they don’t have a moment to themselves without being asked for a million different things. If you can just sit down and listen to it, have a moment by yourself, maybe with somebody if you want to do it that way, but I want people to get something out of it.

Steereo:

Like you and I who are artists with a passion for music, what would your advice be for artists just getting started? What would you tell your younger self, starting out in the industry?

Scott Harris:

I would say, definitely keep working. Never stop thinking about the next steps. Try to find a team who can really help you when you get to that level. Try to find people who give you valuable feedback. I know my friends don’t even like dance music, but I can still ask for feedback. They might say, “look this isn’t my cup of tea, but I think it actually sounds pretty good.” That actually means more to me than my mom telling me it’s the best thing she’s ever heard.

Steereo:

What are some of the exciting things coming up, and share your links and social media and such.

Scott Harris:

In Dallas I have a couple of events coming up, some pool parties which are a good way to refresh and stay out of the heat, a couple cool videos as well, giveaways, all that. You’ll definitely be able to see all that and I’ll keep you updated on my Instagram and Spotify where you can see all my new releases. SHRegime, instagram and facebook, Spotify is under Scott Harris Regime, Scott Harris was taken!

Steereo:

Okay well, thank you so much.
